The person who is consistently sitting down for long hours at work, without much physical activity, is prone to becoming overweight and will be susceptible to many diseases at an earlier age. This sedentary lifestyle will also impact his performance in the office, not to mention his mental health and social relationships.
At the time I joined the gym, I weighed around 87kgs (ideally it should have been 68kgs). I was feeling uneasy because I was heavily overweight; further, my rising blood pressure was another indication of a future danger. One day in August 2007, I decided to work on my increasing weight, and signed up for a membership at Fitness First.
Under one of the staff’s recommendation, I was introduced to the best trainer I could ever find – Mr. Iskandar.
Iskandar took a step-by-step approach in working on the “Big and Heavy” challenge of my weight. He advised me about my eating habits and planned a diet for me which would nourish as well as provide me with the energy I needed without increasing my body fat.
During our training sessions, I often experienced the problem of high pulse rate and breathlessness. Iskandar advised me to undergo a complete medical check-up by a cardiologist. The check up cost me dearly, but it gave me a huge confidence boost that my heart was medically fit for the gym. It was up to me to push myself to exercise. The most significant thing I observe in people who are fat is that they lose interest in exercise because of stress. Iskandar made our sessions more interesting by carefully planning them and making sure they varied with each session. For other non-training days, he gave me assignments which I could do on my own – this helped me to cultivate a “do-it-myself” habit.
