I love to play basketball and was devastated when I was diagnosed with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury with torn meniscus on my right knee - an injury acquired from playing hard in a competitive basketball league. This is probably one of the most dreaded injuries you want to hear if you love sports. Before my injury, I used to have a weekly sports routine of basketball, badminton and Muay Thai. Therefore, it was a very tough time adjusting to a life without sports.
Recovery after ACL reconstruction takes a long time especially if you have meniscus repair. The treatment is a combination of surgery and physiotherapy. After surgery, I had to learn how to walk, climb the stairs, and eventually to learn to run again. After physiotherapy came the last stage of building back the muscles and strengthening the operated leg - that’s when I got a Personal Trainer (PT) to help me. Certified by myphysiotherapist based on his qualifications, my PT designed a rigorous training regimen tailored to my condition by combining
1. weight training for muscle building
2. plyometrics for muscle power and eventually
3. Muay Thai for cardiovascular endurance and motion confidence.
I am now proud to say that I am fitter than I was before my injury, I got my sports life back again and I was even able to train in full capacity in a Muay Thai camp in Thailand.
When I was diagnosed with ACL, I thought it was the end of participating in sports. I am therefore so glad I can tell everyone that ACL is not the end! Recovery is just an invitation to challenge yourself mentally, physically and spiritually. It challenges you to be better than who you were before and to come out stronger.
